Twenty Dollars Demand Note - The New Orleans Canal and Banking Company (strip of two). Will pay on demand to .... or bearer twenty dollars. To have been issued in New Orleans. Reverse not printed.
Note: Because immediately after the Civil War banks of the Confederate States had no official U.S. currency, demand notes were printed. They were replaced by official U.S. currency within two years. The demand notes were printed in strips and cut apart by the banks who dated them before issue.
